Autumn Gourds, CT
|
A group of local artists from the Housatonic Art League introduced me to the wonderful Maple Bank Farm Stand in Roxbury, CT. Having tried quite awhile to envision a composition that could simplify a scene I found overwhelmingly busy, I happened to look down and catch sight of a box of gourds beside me. What caught my fancy was the one odd-shaped, differently colored gourd that had its own very distinctive character and charm, even as it was similar and harmonious with the others. Since I personally related to that, I felt a brotherhood with that odd little characterful gourd and felt excited by the concept. I had to spend alot of hours back in the studio building up the markings, bumps and three dimensionality. What resulted is one of my favorite paintings.
